How trading on Polymarket works from wallet connection to settlement
Polymarket is a prediction market platform where users trade binary outcomes on real-world events. This walkthrough covers the practical steps from wallet setup to withdrawal, assuming you are using MetaMask on the Polygon network.
Wallet setup: connecting to Polygon
You need a Web3 wallet - MetaMask is the most common choice. Polymarket runs on the Polygon network, so your wallet must be configured for Polygon. Open MetaMask, click the network dropdown, and select "Add Network" if Polygon is not already listed. Enter the following details:
- Network name: Polygon Mainnet
- RPC URL: https://polygon-rpc.com
- Chain ID: 137
- Symbol: MATIC
- Block explorer: https://polygonscan.com
After adding, switch MetaMask to Polygon. This step is the source of a frequent error: "Wallet not connected to correct network (Polygon required)." If you see that message, check the network dropdown. You are likely on Ethereum Mainnet or another chain. Switch to Polygon and refresh the page.
Getting USDC on polygon
Polymarket trades settle in USDC, so you need USDC on Polygon. You can obtain it two ways. Bridging from Ethereum: use the official Polygon Bridge (https://bridge.polygon.technology) to move USDC from Ethereum to Polygon. This takes roughly 20 - 30 minutes and costs gas on both sides. Buying directly: swap MATIC for USDC on a Polygon-native DEX like QuickSwap. You will need a small amount of MATIC for gas either way.
Approving USDC for trading
Before placing any trade, you must approve the USDC contract to allow Polymarket’s smart contracts to spend your tokens. This is a standard ERC-20 approval. On Polymarket’s market page, look for an "Approve" button or prompt. Click it. MetaMask opens a transaction window showing the USDC contract address and the amount (often "unlimited" by design). Confirm the transaction.
If you skip this step, you will later encounter: "USDC approval not confirmed." The fix is straightforward - go back and approve. The approval is a one-time action per wallet, unless you revoke it.
Using the market interface
Each market on Polymarket shows the two outcome options (Yes and No), current odds expressed as prices (e.g., 0.45 USDC per share), and a trading form. The odds update continuously based on market activity. You can see the total volume, liquidity, and time remaining until the event resolves.
Placing a buy order
Decide which outcome you want to buy. Enter the number of shares you want in the form. The platform calculates the total USDC required. Check the price - it is not fixed; it moves as you trade because Polymarket uses an automated market maker (AMM) similar to a constant product curve. Your trade will influence the price slightly.
Click "Buy." MetaMask opens a transaction for the USDC transfer. Confirm it. Do not close the browser tab until the transaction confirms. On Polygon, confirmations usually take a few seconds.
Understanding the confirmation
After the transaction confirms, Polymarket shows your position - the number of shares you hold for each outcome. Shares are tokenized. You can hold them until the event resolves. You cannot trade them for USDC until then, unless you sell them back into the same market at the current price.
Withdrawing after resolution
When the event ends, Polymarket’s resolution oracle submits a settlement hash to the smart contract. This triggers a redemption phase. Go to your portfolio or the specific market. You will see a "Redeem" button. Click it. MetaMask opens a transaction to burn your losing shares and claim the winning shares’ value in USDC. Confirm the transaction.
After redemption, the USDC lands in your wallet on Polygon. You can then bridge it back to Ethereum, swap it for MATIC, or withdraw to a centralized exchange via Polygon’s bridge. Withdrawals cost a small gas fee in MATIC.
Troubleshooting common errors
Two errors dominate new-user complaints. "Wallet not connected to correct network (Polygon required)" nearly always means MetaMask is on the wrong chain. Switch to Polygon Mainnet. "USDC approval not confirmed" means you skipped the approval step. Approve USDC spending before your first trade.
Polymarket has no central order book. Every trade is a swap against an AMM pool. Shares are minted by the pool and burned on redemption. The process is functional but requires a working knowledge of token approvals and chain selection. Mistakes waste gas but rarely lose funds.
